One bridge, amplified on the rotating side
The AMP-SG-M1 is a miniature single-channel strain gage amplifier, designed to amplify the signal before it passes through a slip ring. It holds a low-drift bipolar bridge excitation supply, ± 2.5 V (AMP-SG-M1-5) or ± 5 V (AMP-SG-M1-10), a low-noise differential amplifier and a 100 kΩ or 1 MΩ shunt calibration resistor, switched remotely in either direction. Gain is set from 100 to 2000 V/V, the output reaches ± 10 V and the response is 20 kHz at −3 dB. It runs on ± 15 V DC, measures 31.75 × 20.32 × 6.35 mm, weighs 14.17 g and operates from −40 to 125 °C.
The amplifier is bonded to a clean surface with Dow Corning 3145 RTV, taking care not to cut its color-coded hook-up wires, and handled as an electrostatic sensitive device. It needs a full strain gage bridge to regulate the excitation. Shorting the gain wires gives 2000 V/V, leaving them open 100 V/V, and a resistor sets any gain between; the shunt wires work the same way. A PS Series power supply provides the ± 15 V, turns the bridge excitation off by reversing polarity and applies positive or negative shunt calibration.
It is used on the rotating side, ahead of the slip ring, to measure accessory belt pulley torque on an engine, crankshaft torque on a running engine and prop shaft torque.
