The MUX-12 series is a family of five twelve-channel analog to CAN modules from Michigan Scientific. Each module supplies sensor excitation, conditions and digitizes its twelve channels at 16 bits, and delivers them on one CAN 2.0 or CAN FD bus: up to 2 ksps on CAN 2.0, up to 8 ksps on CAN FD.

Five models, five sensor types

  • MUX-BC350-12: twelve 350 Ω quarter-arm strain gages, 3-wire, with bridge completion and 4.5 V excitation.
  • MUX-FB-12: twelve full-bridge strain gage transducers, 4-wire, with 4.5 V excitation.
  • MUX-HL-12: twelve high-level sensors such as accelerometers and string pots, with 4.8 V sensor power.
  • MUX-TC-12: twelve thermocouples, type K, J or T, with cold junction compensation, up to 1 ksps.
  • MUX-RTD100-12: twelve PT100 RTDs, up to 8 ksps.

Up to four modules stack, without daisy-chain cables, for 48 synchronized channels. Each channel is configured independently by software, and the strain gage models run a shunt verification at power-up or on demand. The included software, run under Windows 11 through a PEAK-System USB-to-CAN adapter, views and records one module at a time and generates the DBC file for a data recorder.

For rotating parts, the modules mount on a slip ring. The SR10AW/WFT slip ring carries a 1 024 ppr absolute quadrature encoder, digitized and synchronized with the module data, up to 2 000 rpm; the MUX-ENC-ADA adapter layer joins it to the modules. On a fixed part, the MUX-CON-ADA-NS adapter layer takes the power and data cable.

Specifications

  • 16-bit data at up to 8 000 sps per channel; bandwidth 1.6 kHz at −3 dB at 4 or 8 ksps; channel-to-channel skew at most 5.5 µs.
  • Input range ±36 mV on the strain gage models, ±2.2 V on the MUX-HL-12.
  • Housing 86 mm in diameter, 25.4 mm high, about 300 g, IP67 with the stacking connectors; operation from −40 to 85 °C.
  • Galvanic isolation 200 V from channel to CAN and to power, not a safety isolation.

The datasheet values are marked preliminary. See the MUX-12 series page for the models and datasheets.
