Measuring steering torque and angle at the steering wheel

  • Steering torque
  • Steering angle

In brief

Steering torque and steering angle are measured to develop and verify a steering system. A steering wheel transducer mounts to the original steering wheel, or replaces it on the splined steering shaft. Tests are run in the laboratory and during normal driving.

transmission types: slip ring (SW-SR2) or telemetry (SW-TEL)

Two ways to mount it

The transducer either mounts to the existing steering wheel of the vehicle, or replaces it by mounting directly on the splined steering shaft.

Torque and angle, with a slip ring

The SW-SR2 measures torque with a full-bridge strain gauge sensor in high-strength stainless steel, rated 100, 200 or 300 N·m and temperature compensated from 24 to 85 °C. The steering angle comes from an inductive encoder with 0.04° resolution, multi-turn over ± 1 440°. The signals leave through a Michigan Scientific slip ring assembly.

The torque transducer and the steer angle sensor are powered and controlled by a DIGI-STEER control unit, with ± 10 V and CAN 2.0 outputs.

Torque only, by telemetry

The SW-TEL measures steering torque only, in the same 100, 200 or 300 N·m ranges. The signal leaves by far-field telemetry from a battery-powered package. The transducer is stainless steel and temperature compensated, like the SW-SR2. It needs no position restraint, which simplifies mounting. The vehicle steer angle sensor can be read with an optional CAN bus reader.

Which one

SW-SR2Steering torque and steering angle. Slip ring, control unit, ± 10 V and CAN 2.0 outputs.
SW-TELSteering torque only. Telemetry, battery powered, no position restraint to fit.

What you get

The torque at the steering wheel, and its angle with the SW-SR2, recorded on the vehicle with the driver at the wheel, for the development and the verification of the steering system.

Frequent questions

Can steering torque be measured without removing the original steering wheel?

Yes. A steering wheel transducer either mounts to the existing steering wheel of the vehicle or replaces it by mounting directly on the splined steering shaft.

How is the steering angle measured over several turns of the steering wheel?

With a multi-turn encoder. The SW-SR2 steering wheel transducer uses an inductive encoder with 0.04° resolution, multi-turn over ± 1 440°. The SW-TEL measures steering torque only.

Can steering wheel torque be measured wirelessly?

Yes. The SW-TEL sends the steering torque signal by far-field telemetry from a battery-powered package, and it has no position restraint to fit.

What outputs does a steering wheel torque and angle transducer give?

± 10 V analog and CAN 2.0. The SW-SR2 is powered and controlled by a DIGI-STEER control unit, which gives both outputs.
