Two modules make a CAN link
Two FO-CAN modules joined by a fiber-optic cable make a differential CAN link, to monitor or stimulate the equipment under test. Up to four FO-CAN modules can also work with one FO-CAN-R, a 4-channel bench-top or rack-mount receiver.
The circuitry is designed for low latency, so the link stays bidirectional at 1 Mbit/s over 20 m of fiber. It works with most differential CAN protocols. A switch sets the termination to 60 Ω, 120 Ω or ∞. The CAN pin-out is the one most equipment uses, so no custom cable is needed.
Three AA alkaline batteries run a module for more than 30 hours, and rechargeable cells also fit. The shielding gives high immunity to EMI and EMP, with low radiated emissions. The modules are validated for EMC up to 200 V/m from 500 kHz to 18 GHz, and 600 V/m pulsed (5 % duty cycle, 5 µs rise time) from 1 to 2.5 GHz.
