01 · The essential

Circuits, seals and rotation sensor to choose

The slip ring mounts on the end of a rotating shaft. Gold alloy rings connect strain gages, thermocouples or other sensors on rotating machinery, with 0.5 A per connection and a peak resistance variation of 0.1 Ω at most. The rotation sensor measures rotational velocity, angular position and direction of rotation, and uses none of the slip ring circuits. Every model also exists without it.

Speed depends on the number of rings: 10 000 rpm with 10, 4 000 rpm with 20, 2 400 rpm with 36. With the contacting weatherproof seals (W) the limit is 2 000 rpm, which covers most wet-weather uses such as automotive wheels. Sealed units can survive days of total submersion.

Housings are 80 to 115 mm long, depending on the number of rings, and weigh 400 to 480 g. The rotor is high-strength stainless steel and the stator is nickel-plated aluminum, with threaded holes for a rotation restraint. Rotor and stator take circular connectors or solder terminals; the connection information is engraved on the housing.
