Short S6: six-circuit compact end-of-shaft slip ring

The Short S6 is the six-circuit model of the Short S-Series. It mounts on a shaft end and carries strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers and low voltages from rotor to stator. Its six circuits are rated at 500 mA through precious metal rings and brushes, with a peak resistance variation of 0.1 Ω, and the stainless steel and aluminum case is sealed against dust. The rotor, 41.28 mm (1.625 in) in diameter, carries color-coded solder terminals. It is 24.69 mm long and runs up to 12 000 rpm, from −1 to 138 °C; the Short S6/X weighs 61 g, the Short S6/T 56 g. A colder environment is specified when ordering.

It is ordered as Short S6/X, with a connector on the stator and one 3 m (10 ft) cable; Short S6/T, with six solder terminals on the stator; or Short S6/T/N7, with stator terminals and the rotor wires leaving through the rotor flange. The part number guide explains the suffixes.

The rotor is fixed to the shaft end with two 4-40 or M2.5 screws on a 36.45 mm (1.435 in) bolt circle, directly or through a rotor adapter, with a total indicated runout of no more than 0.025 mm (0.001 in). Stranded wires of 28 or 30 AWG, 24 AWG at most, run along the shaft or through its bore and are secured to it before being soldered to the rotor terminals. The S-Series user manual describes the mounting. The stator is held by a tether on its tabs, a flexible cable or a soft spring.

It is primarily used on engines in vehicles, where space is limited and conditions are hot, fast and vibrating: see measurements in limited space and accessory belt pulley torque.
